Fun New Audi
Audi has sold the sporty A3 in Europe for several years, but its latest redesign comes to America as well. Not quite a wagon and not quite a hatchback, the A3 has decent room for four (officially seats five)as well as good cargo space. In front it has the bold new Audi grille that some like, some hate. But from the side, the A3 has a sleek look, with the beltline angling up as the roofline angles down, making the windows narrower at the rear and giving the car a look of motion. Initially the A3 is only available with front-wheel drive and the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, but its expected that next year, we'll get the more powerful 250-hp V6 with quattro all-wheel drive. That should be fun! But that's not to say that this one isn't a blast to drive. The 2.0-liter engine produces 200 horsepower, but more importantly, it has 207 lb-ft of torque at just 1800 rpm. This means that it's almost always got good power, and makes the A3 feel quite quick. Handling is also quite impressive, especially for a front-wheel drive car. The ride is frim, but not uncomfortable. This car put a smile on my face in the first 30 seconds of driving it. The car we drove had a 6-speed manual - the A3 is also available with Audi's DSG transmission, or Direct Shift Gearbox. This is basically a manual transmission with an automatic clutch, and it can be shifted manually or left to shift on its own. What's most impressive about the A3 is the price. Our test model had not extra options, but came standard with alloy wheels, good stereo, stability control and ABS. All this in a good looking package for just $25,000. Not the cheapest car out there, but it has the solid feel of a more expensive car. I was quite impressed with this new Audi - it makes a great alternative for the buyer looking for a premium European sedan or wagon. -- Perry Stern
An Audi That Pampers and Protects
The A6 Quattro grips the road in the worst weather and doesn't skimp on luxury. All in all, a nice alternative to a high-end SUV
